Reef Relief encourages you to be a reef-friendly when diving and boating. Here are a few tips: * Snorkel aware, dive with care. Before booking a reef trip, check out weather conditions. Its best not to go out in rough seas. Poor visibility, strong winds and waves reduce safe interaction. * Even the slightest touch can damage sensitive coral polyps. Avoid all contact from fins, hands and equipment when diving or snorkeling. * Snorkelers should wear float coats--inflatable snorkel vests--to avoid standing on the reef whil you adjust your gear. * Divers should only use the weight needed and practice buoyancy control to avoid any contact with the ocean bottom. * Divers should avoid wearing gloves and touching or collecting marinelife. It is illegal to feed fish in Florida because it changes their natural behavior and is dangerous for you. * Remember, it is illegal to harvest coral in Florida and many other places. And buying coral souvenirs only helps damage other reefs. * Dumping trash at sea is illegal; bring you trash back to shore and recycle it. * Use reef mooring buoys or anchor in a sandy area away from living corals to protect them. * Use sewage pumpout facilities if available and make sure your boat has a holding tank and never discharge sewage on or near the coral reef. The Florida Keys is a NO DISCHARGE ZONE for boater sewage. * Accidental boat groundings in our shallow waters can be avoided by consulting tide and navigational charts and steering clear of shallows. Remember, brown, brown, run aground. Blue, blue, sail on through. White, white, you just might. * Practice good seamanship when boating. Maintain safe distances from fishermen, avoid wildelife disturbance--stay 100 yards offshore and keep speed, noise and wakes to a minimum near mangroves. The first generation to discover scuba may the the last to enjoy coral reefs, unless we all get inovolved.
